Water’s Experts: the experience of the French students at the Lycée Jean Lurçat

In the framework of the Water’s Experts project, in June 2023, our partner Collectif pour un Service Civique Européen coordinated the training course for students in France.

15 talented students of the Lycée Jean Lurçat, in Bruyères (Grand Est region) were involved in the training activities with the aim of providing professional and technical skills in water resources management.

The training course was held by the experts Leandre Bara and Garance Adloff, collaborators of the School and Observatory of Earth Science at the University of Strasbourg, whose great technical expertise was precious to explore such topics.

Thanks to the interdisciplinary approach, students had the chance to enhance their scientific knowledge and acquire both technical and professional skills in the field of water management. As for the other project countries, the four modules covered a wide range of topics, including river geomorphology, cartography and basics of GIS tools, river ecology, alteration of river environments and hints of river rehabilitation. 

Each module encompassed both theoretical and practical activities, in order to allow participants to strengthen their understanding of new notions by putting into practice what they learned throughout the course. Students focused on the analysis of the river Vologne, located in the Grand Est region, in the Vosges department, and they developed a final report in groups on the situation of the river.

Furthermore, the course represented an incredible opportunity to raise awareness and educate the participants on climate change adaptation and on the importance of respecting natural resources, with a special attention to the local river resources’ protection.

As a conclusion of the activity, four students were selected to participate in the Final Event of the Water’s Experts project that took place in Italy, hosted by Paese dell’Acqua. This experience constituted an amazing opportunity for young people to confront their knowledge with other peers coming from different countries and share their insights on what they learned.
