The success of the Water’s Experts training course in North Macedonia and Italy

In May and June 2023, the Water’s Experts training course successfully concluded in Tetovo (North Macedonia) and in Bojano (Italy). 

During the last four months, the students of I.I.S.S. Lombardo-Radice, in Bojano, and the students of Medical High School “Nikola Stein”, in Tetovo, have approached the topics of water resources management, being able to identify the main issues of a river and propose solutions to address them, becoming real Water’s Experts.

In North Macedonia, pollution is a major problem and many river beds are ruined by the debris that the local population is purposely leaving behind not thinking about the consequences. In Tetovo, where the training was held, river Pena is not an exception to this negative trend, and it was chosen as a case study for the students to have their practical classes during the training course. 

They had the opportunity to better understand the consequences of a bad management of the water resources and the struggles of the river beds, but also to acquire the knowledge and specific techniques to face these challenges.

For the last class, the biology professor, Sasho Markovic, suggested creating a map of river Pena with the students, on which they will mark the most critical spots of the river regarding pollution. The students showed real concern about the mistreatment of the water bodies in the country, and they proposed to set an example for their peers by raising awareness regarding this issue.

In Italy, the last lesson was an occasion for the students to look back to the work done and brainstorm on their experience within the training course. Moreover, they worked on a proposal for a redevelopment intervention of the river Biferno source, which was their case study for the practical lessons of the training.

After this intensive training, some students will now have the chance to meet in Sassinoro, in August, on the occasion of the final event of the Water’s Experts project, to share their experiences and put into practice what they have learned, together with their peers from other European countries.
